Internships and Fellowships

VLP’s Summer Intern Program provides undergraduate and law students the opportunity to work directly on efforts to improve access to justice in Maine. VLP interns learn about and support many aspects of civil legal aid while serving Mainers in need of legal help.

The Volunteer Lawyers Project invites applications for our Summer Internship Program from undergraduate and law students who are dependable, curious, organized, and compassionate, and who can work independently. We are a small legal aid organization, and our interns provide essential help for our many programs and services.

VLP interns may complete client intakes in courthouses for our Protection from Abuse and family law programs, design educational materials regarding the law and our services, assist with online and telephone intake, complete data cleaning/updating projects, assist with social media and website design, and host the remote consultation meetings between lawyers and clients. We aim to match each intern’s areas of responsibility with their goals and interests.

Whether you are looking to assist those from vulnerable communities, expand your professional network, learn about legal aid and nonprofit work, or help organize and optimize – we have a spot for you.

MAPIL Fellowship

The University of Maine School of Law’s MAPIL (Maine Association for Public Interest Law) Fellowship Program enables a small number of first-year and second-year students to receive a stipend for their work as summer interns with various public interest organizations and agencies unable to provide paid internships. The VLP can host one half-time MAPIL Fellow each summer as part of its Summer Intern Program. Maine Law students can indicate their interest in a MAPIL Fellowship at VLP on their internship application.

Please contact Maine Law's Office of Career Services for more information about the MAPIL Fellowship Program.
